We all know about the new Store design coming soon, right? Well to implement this new integrated application SONY will be taking down the the “Store” portion of the PLAYSTATION Network. This “scheduled maintenance” will effect all regions and will occur from 8 a.m. PST to 11 p.m. PST. After the maintenance is over PS3 users will be able to download the latest firmware which will give users the new Store icon and some nifty Audio features [explained after break]. Note that they do NOT plan to take down the entire Network.

For the exact text on SCEA’s support site keep on reading:

The PLAYSTATION®Network will be taken offline for a scheduled maintenance to our network during the following times:

Start: April 14, 2008, beginning at 8:00 a.m., Pacific Time
End: April 14, 2008, ending at 11:00 p.m., Pacific Time

During this time, the new PLAYSTATION®Store upgrade will be taking place. As a result access to the PLAYSTATION Network will be restricted, including:

  • No access to the PLAYSTATION®Store

It is not anticipated that this will affect other PLAYSTATION Network services

Once the new PLAYSTATION Store upgrade is complete, a new system software version will be available for download. This new system software must be installed before you may access the PLAYSTATION Network.

The new firmware update will also include the following:

I have more good news to report today – the system software update will also add DTS-HD Master Audio output for Blu-ray videos, which means the high-definition visuals of Blu-ray will now be matched with the highest quality audio for the ultimate movie-watching experience on PS3.

DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound. The firmware update will add DTS-HD High Resolution Audio as well, which is a similar output technology that requires less disc space. You can read more about both codecs here.

A lot of you, particularly the home theatre enthusiasts and audiophiles out there, have been asking us for this capability, and we can’t wait until you have an opportunity to pop in a compatible Blu-ray video to test it out for yourself.

All of this will be available by mid week or later. After the update the MGO Beta, GT5: Prologue, Warhawk: Operation Broken Mirror, and long awaited Rock Band content will be available to download from the Store.
